Kashmiri student falls from 4-storeyed building, needs financial support

Srinagar: Condition of an engineering student from Kashmir, who fell from the terrace of a four storeyed building in Bangalore on January 9, continues to remain critical at a private hospital while his family has reached out on social media to seek financial support.

The injured student – Beigh Aqib Javid – underwent a brain surgery and is since on ventilator support, according to the family.

The Manipal Hospital, in the city’s Whitefield neighbourhood, has issued an estimation letter, stating Rs 9.5 lakh as the approximate cost of hospitalization. Meanwhile, the hospital’s Chairman, Dr Sudarshan Ballal, assured help in the case.

Aqib is a second year student at a private engineering college, enrolled under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme.

According to the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abdul Ahad, the student fell from the terrace of a rented house where he stayed with his friends.

“He went to the terrace to throw garbage. There was no vacant land around the building, so he crossed over to the terrace of an adjacent building, and while crossing back he slipped and fell down,” he said.

Ahad said it was an accident and there was no clue of a foul play.

Aqib was staying overnight with his friends to prepare for an upcoming examination, his friend Faisal Mehraj said.

He said Aqib’s family – from Boniyar area of Baramulla district – needs financial support to pay hefty hospital bills. “The doctors said the surgery was successful but he (Aqib) is still on the ventilator even though he came out of coma today,” he said.

“The doctors have estimated cost for about a week only but he may need to stay in the hospital for longer,” he said. “We managed to pay around one-and-a-half lakh rupees out of the present bill of six lakh rupees.”

He said the hospital charges Rs 80,000 for a day’s stay in the Intensive Care Unit.

According to the post being circulated on social media, Aqib’s father Javid Ahmad Beigh is a tailor by profession and the family does not have any other source of income. ‘…his family has sold everything to keep their last hope happy and blissful,’ it reads.
