Man arrested in Kashmir for making derogatory comment on Facebook

SRINAGAR: A man was arrested in southern Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday for making a derogatory comment on an image on Facebook showing kids playing in a water pool at a private kindergarten school.

In a statement issued here, a police spokesperson said that principal of KY International School lodged a complaint against Ishtiyaq Ahmad Sofi, a resident of Shirpora Anantnag, for allegedly defaming the school’s name.

The principal, in his complaint, said that Ishtiyaq had uploaded a photograph of the school on his Facebook timeline and “projected the photograph in such a manner which has not only defamed the name of school but has created an environment which may disturb the public order.”

However, a police official told JandK Now that the school had shared an image showing some three to four year girl students playing in the water pool inside the school campus, while some boys of the same age were looking at them. “The school had shared the image on Facebook, but Ishtiyaq had made an abusive comment on it,” he said.

“During the course of investigation, it surfaced that the said person had done this act for personal interests,” the police spokesperson said. “The accused was arrested in the instant case and further investigation is going on.”

Police filed a case FIR number 100/2016 at police station Janglat Mandi under section 505(b) of Ranbir Penal Code.
