SKIMS kicks off Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery for obese and diabetic patients

Srinagar: Bariatric and metabolic surgery in SKIMS got a kick off today when Dr. Muffazal Lakadwala from Mumbai who is a world renowned Braitric surgeon operated on two morbidly obese patients, official sources said. Dr. Muffazalhas has operated heaviest person weighing 285 Kgs in China and has maximum series of singly incision Laparoscopic Bariatric surgery in the world. 

First patient was 23 years young boy weighing 120kg and was subjected to sleeve resections, and second was a 60 year female weighing 140 kgs was diabetic on 90 units of insulin and underwent mini gastic bypass procedure in a live workshop organized by department of  upper G.I. and Hepatobillary and pancreatic division headed by Prof. Sameer H. Naqash. The workshop was beamed live in SKIMS auditorium were faculty, students and various other dignitaries were present.

Dr. Muffazal Lakadwala also delivered a lecture chaired by Ex- Director SKIMS  Prof Mehrajudin,on  role of surgery in people with obesity and diabetes and other metabolic derangements. He stressed the need for developing a bariatric surgery program to deal with increasing number of such patients.

Director SKIMS Prof Showkat Ali  Zargar&  EOSG welcomed the guests and lauded the department for organizing the event he said that the need of our is to start the Bariatric surgery at SKIMS as soon as possible and promised all possible support for  starting the program.

Organizing Chairman Prof. Sameer H. Naqash appreciated the role of the director in taking bold initiative towards starting the program and convincing Dr. Mufazzal to come Srinagar against all odds and hold a workshop. He thanked Dr. Muffazal and all the other dignitaries in the hall. Dr. Naqash asked the patients who want to register themselves for this procedure to attended the SKIMS OPD on Monday at Room No. 132.
