Air force jet crashes in Kashmir, pilot dead

Srinagar: Pilot of Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 belonging to Indian Air Force died when the aircraft crashed in open fields in South Kashmir’s Bijbehara area Tuesday morning.

Shortly after the crash, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted, “Reports coming in of a Mig fighter having crashed in South Kashmir. Hope the pilot & the people on the ground are safe”. However, when the death of the pilot was ascertained, he expressed condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.

Omar Abdullah also expressed the need for better defense procurement. “Not entirely disconnected from today’s crash the new Govt needs to sort of defence procurement issue for Navy, AirForce & Army ASAP”, he tweeted.
