Army soldier commits suicide in Kashmir

Srinagar: An Army soldier on Monday alleged committed suicide at a camp in Kangan area of Ganderbal district, about 40 kilometers from Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar.

Reports said that Sepoy Sunil shot himself with his service rifle last night. It was initially not known why he took this extreme step, sources in police said, adding that the preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased used his service rifle to end his life.

Sunil was on sentry duty inside the Wusan camp in Kangan area. Sources said that his colleagues first heard a shot who rushed towards him only to find him dead.

Pertinently, similar cases have happened in the State in past as well, when the paramilitary personnel have either ended their life or killed others without any provocation. On February 27, this year, an Army soldier killed five of his colleagues before shooting himself in a camp in Ganderbal district.

Experts say that such incidents happen apparently due to tension that builds up among soldiers doing their duties in ‘unfriendly’ conditions and lack of recreational facilities. Similarly, tension may also build up due to long periods of separation from families.
