Jammu: Government of Jammu and Kashmir has decided to provide temporary mobile connection to the registered Amarnath pilgrims this year. The pre-paid connection would be valid for seven days, as compared to four days of validity last year.
According to official sources, State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) would issue SIM cards only to those pilgrims who are officially registered for the pilgrimage. The pilgrims could avail the facility at special counters that would be set up at the Nunwan and Baltal Base Camps.
However, the pilgrims who wish to obtain a connection need to present proof of their identity, proof of permanent address, and valid registration papers at the counter, before they can be provided with the SIM card.
Government is also planning to create permanent infrastructure for providing telecom facilities for the future. The Chief Executive Officer of the Amarnath Shrine Board – Navin Choudhary – the Union Department of Telecommunication has agreed to consider allotment of separate funds in this regard.

The department has also advised the private telecom operators to use their resources to install telecom towers in the pilgrimage area.
A high level meeting was held on Thursday to discuss the telecom facilities for the pilgrimage. The meeting was chaired by Governor – Narinder Nath Vohra. The meeting was informed that time bound steps were taken to enhance telecom facilities for the pilgrims this year.
